Buñuelos

Buñuelos

Buñuelos are a type of fried dough pastry popular in various Latin American countries. Here’s a basic recipe for making buñuelos:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil)

Instructions:

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients:
    • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  2. Cream Butter and Sugar:
    • In a separate bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  3. Add Wet Ingredients:
    • Beat in the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture.
    • Gradually add the milk, mixing until well combined.
  4. Combine Mixtures:
    • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a smooth dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a bit more flour.
  5. Roll and Cut:
    • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Roll it out to about 1/8 inch thickness.
    • Cut the dough into desired shapes (usually circles or squares).
  6. Heat Oil:
    • Heat oil in a deep pan or skillet to 350°F (175°C). There should be enough oil to submerge the buñuelos.
  7. Fry Buñuelos:
    • Carefully place the cut dough pieces into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown and crispy, about 1-2 minutes per side.
    • Use a slotted spoon to remove the buñuelos from the oil and drain them on paper towels.
  8. Optional:
    • Dust with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar while still warm.

Enjoy your buñuelos with a cup of hot chocolate or coffee!
